What’s with the new stripes on 18th Avenue NE?

Recently on my way to Home Depot I noticed a new addition on the pavement of 18th Avenue. I immediately thought that someone from Southern California designed it because they must not know that five months out of the year, the bike traffic will almost cease to exist, and the painted lanes will probably be covered with plowed snow and ice. I also wondered if anyone actually drove 18th Avenue to realize that it really needs a new layer of blacktop. ( I love to take my off road jeep down 18th, it reminds me of being off road.) At one point on 18th and Central the lanes take an interesting shift to the left, making all the traffic take a detour that is really unexpected. I also wonder how this project was funded. It’s not as if bicycles have license fees to help the costs of such projects, and even though the person or persons responsible for such a project had some good intentions for the safety of bicyclists, I don’t think this project measures up to anything more than a nuisance. If safety is an issue, how about instructing bicyclists to start obeying the traffic laws like stopping for stop signs and stop lights. Gee, now there’s a novel idea for safety.
