American Craft Council lecture series
#10280
What: The American Craft Council, 1224 Marshall St. NE, continues its spring lecture series Thursday, May 9, 7-9:30 p.m., with "The Craft of Sign Painting," a look at the endurance of hand-painted signs in America. Faythe Levine and Sam Macon, directors and authors of the recently released documentary and book, "Sign Painters," will discuss their project, highlight contemporary practitioners of sign painting, and cite examples of quality, hand-painted signs right here in the Twin Cities. Forrest Wozniak and Phil Vandervarrt, two Minneapolis-based artists featured in "Sign Painters," will also be present to illustrate the time-honored methods of their craft. For more information, call 612-206-3100 or visit craftcouncil.org.

Looking ahead to June:

The American Craft Council will conclude its lecture series Thursday, June 20, 7-9:30 p.m., with a "Craft Cage Match" on the roof of the historic Grain Belt building. Two curators enter, and barring any disasters, two curators will leave, having given the audience a lot to think about. Jennifer Scanlan, former associate curator at the Museum of Arts and Design, and Jennifer Komar Olivarez, associate curator of decorative arts, textiles, and sculpture at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, will lead opposing teams of artists and makers in a series of art-related challenges. For more information, call 612-206-3100 or visit craftcouncil.org.
