Date change for NorthNews June edition

NorthNews will be printed later than originally announced, in May, for our June edition. The paper will be dated May 28, but will be delivered starting Saturday, May 24. To accommodate the different printing date, the deadline for the edition will be Thursday, May 15.

Columbia Heights Public Schools co-sponsoring American Indian Pow Wow

The public is invited to the first Columbia Heights Public Schools’ co-sponsored American Indian Pow Wow, Saturday, April 26, 1 p.m., at the Hylander Center, 1400 49th Ave. NE. The Pow Wow is free and includes singing, dancing, drawings, games and a traditional American Indian meal of fish, wild rice and bread. In addition to scheduled performers, American Indian drummers, singers, dancers are welcomed. The Pow Wow is sponsored by Columbia Heights Public Schools, Fridley Public Schools and Spring Lake Public Schools thanks to the generous support from Northeast Bank.

Family History Fair, April 26

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 100 Silver Lake Road NW, New Brighton, will host a free Family History Fair, Saturday, April 26, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., featuring a series of classes covering many aspects of genealogy, from beginner to internet experts. Choose up to any five classes from the 15 being offered. Pre-register for the classes at familyhistoryfair.yellowcounter.com. A free light lunch will be served, and one-on-one help will be provided for people with specific questions on their family.

Community Baby Shower donations needed

The East Minneapolis Exchange Club is hosting a Community Baby Shower to benefit organizations that work to prevent child abuse. During the month of April (Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month) the group will be collecting new, unused baby items for organizations that work to prevent child abuse and support families with young kids and babies. Donations can be dropped off at Pacifier (310 East Hennepin Ave., City Center Skyway, 4942 France Ave. S.), or at Siwek Lumber, 2536 Marshall St. NE. There are also two online registries where you can see some suggestions of items needed: www.pacifier.com (search ’baby shower’ in last name), and www.thethingsiwant.com/communityregistry/list/wishlist/. At the end of April, the East Minneapolis Exchange Club will distribute the items to: Prevent Child Abuse MN, Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery, La Oportunidad, East Side Neighborhood Services’ Child Development Center, and Sheridan Neighborhood Clinic. Run Camden 5K

Sign up for a new road race! The "Run Camden 5K" is to be held on Saturday, May 10, in North Minneapolis to support Webber Camden Neighborhood Organization programming. All ages and abilities are invited to come run (or walk) the 5K route (about 3 miles), starting and ending at Patrick Henry High School. The cost is $20 if you sign up before April 15, and there is a discounted entry fee option for families. There will also be a free Kid’s Run on the Henry track at 10 a.m. Youth will complete two laps on the track, approximately 1/2 mile. In partnership with the South Minneapolis Housing Fair, Minneapolis Community Education presents a series of free home improvement and homeownership workshops held at Henry High School, 4320 Newton Ave. N. and Lucy Laney Elementary School, 3333 Penn Ave. N. Classes are held on various weekday evenings, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Topics include sinks and drains (4/16), patios (4/28), perennial flower gardening (5/5), vegetable gardening (5/8), faucets (5/21) and fertilizer (5/29). New Webber Park Library meetings

Join Hennepin County Commissioner Linda Higgins and Hennepin County staff for a series of community meetings regarding the new Webber Park Library. The next meetings will be held at the Folwell Recreation Center Gym, 1615 Dowling Ave. N, Minneapolis on Tuesday, April 15, 6-7:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 10, 9:30-11 a.m. (Note: Future meetings may be at different locations.) These community meetings will offer more information about the planning process for a new library. Share your ideas about what you would like to see in a new library. All ages are welcome.
