Learning for Leadership community corn roast

Learning for Leadership, a public K-12 charter school with an eight-year history, will host a National Night Out open house and community corn roast Tuesday, Aug. 5, 5-7 p.m., at its campus just west of Columbia Golf Course, 3300 5th St. NE. The event features free food, kids games, school tours and a performance by the Fantasy Factory BMX high flying stunt show.

Hip Hop Camp at the Capri

MacPhail Center for Music will offer a Hip Hop camp for students ages 13-19, Monday-Friday, Aug. 11-15, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at the b>Capri Theater, 2027 West Broadway Ave. Through a variety of workshops and instruction from some of the Twin Cities finest spoken word and hip hop artists, students will write and perform their own solo or collaborative pieces, in just five days. In addition to learning the basics of beatboxing, students will also create their own beats using Garage Band software. All students will perform in a concert for family and friends in the evening of Aug. 15. Students who qualify for free and reduced lunch can attend the camp for only $25. Regular tuition is $335. Camp Capri presents "Birthday Sleepover"

The stars of "Camp Capri," a summer youth theater program, will present "Birthday Sleepover," Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2 p.m., and Thursday, Aug. 7, 7 p.m., at the Capri Theater, 2027 West Broadway Ave. "Birthday Sleepover" is an original one-act play written and directed by Greta Oglesby. It’s a pajama party filled with dance, drumming and a few more surprises. Tickets are available at the door, and cost $5 for adults, $3 for children under 12.

Victory Neighborhood Garden Tour, Aug. 3

The sixth annual Victory Neighborhood garden tour on Sunday, Aug. 3, 1-4 p.m., will kick off with a pre-tour garden party at noon, at the Butterfly Gardens of Loring Elementary School, 2600 44th Ave. N (44th and Thomas). There will be tour brochures, light snacks and lemonade, plus Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer your gardening questions. The free, self-guided tour starts at 1 p.m., and features gardens of the Victory neighborhood, highlighting a wide range of gardening styles, the diversity of Victory’s landscaped spaces and the pride that residents take in their gardens and community. Music in the Heart of Victory

Music in the Heart of Victory will return to The Warren, 4400 Osseo Rd., on Fridays, Aug. 8 and 15, 5 p.m. start. Food trucks will be offering dinner. Bring chairs and blankets. Performances will be at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. The line up this year includes St. Anthony Main, an a capella quartet with two residents from the Victory neighborhood, Bruce Jackson and Friends, a four-piece band whose residents are all from the North Side, Stealin’ Home, three-part harmonies and eclectic acoustic music, Dan Hylton, a Northside resident playing guitar and vocals, Richard Atkinson, playing guitar and vocals. A sixth act will be announced.

GriefShare group at St. Matthew

St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 4101 Washington St. NE, will host a 12-week grief recovery support group for those who have lost a loved one. The group will meet Wednesdays, Sept. 3-Nov. 19, 6:30-8:30 p.m.. This group is sponsored by people who understand experience of loss and want to offer comfort and encouragement during this difficult time. GriefShare sessions are designed to help participants to successfully travel the journey from mourning to joy. Sessions include a video seminar and group discussion. St. Anthony Community Theater presents "The Wizard of Oz"

St. Anthony Community Theater presents "The Wizard of Oz," on July 25-Aug. 3 in the St. Anthony High School auditorium, 3303 33rd Ave. NE. In the play, Dorothy Gale is tossed by tornado into a land where she must form new friendships to battle the Wicked Witch of the West. Dorothy tries to find her way home, despite the efforts of talking trees, flying monkeys and sleep-inducing poppies to thwart her plans. The director promises some "new twists" on the play, but don’t worry—Dorothy gets home. Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows are at 7 p.m.; Sunday shows are at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $12/adults, $10/students and seniors, and are available at the door, or online at sactheater.org.

Celebrate family, music and art with MN Sinfonia this weekend

The MN Sinfonia will present two concerts this summer at North Commons Park, 1801 James Ave. N. On Friday, July 25, 10 a.m., the group presents its Northside Children’s Concert.

On Saturday, July 26, the group will perform at the Northside Music and Arts Festival. The family event starts at 3 p.m. with music including local talent at 3 p.m. and the Sounds of Blackness at 4 p.m., leading up to the MN Sinfonia concert at 5:30 p.m., featuring Northside children from Lundstrum Center for the Arts performing The Nightingale. There will also be a Zumba clinic, a drum clinic, health screenings, and various art activities.

Wednesday: Twin Cities River Rats Water Ski Show

River RatsThe Twin Cities River Rats are back on the Mississippi providing free family water ski shows that incorporate music, themed skits, actors, announcers and talented skiers doing stunts, jumps, human pyramids, barefooting and doubles. The River Rats accept donations, and concessions, souvenir programs, apparel and memorabilia are for sale at every show. Events are held Wednesdays, July 23 and Aug. 6, and Thursdays, July 31, Aug. 14, 21 and 28, 7 p.m. along the Mississippi River on West River Rd. near 17th Ave. N., just south of W. Broadway Ave. There will also be a special "Military Appreciation Show" on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 6:30 p.m. Bring a blanket or chair; parking is free. Details at www.tcriverrats.com.
