What’s new at the Mpls Photo Center

Mpls Photo Center, 2400 N. 2nd St., has two new exhibits opening March 14 and running through April 27. "The Visual Narrative" is the result of a Call for Entry, juried by Susan Burnstine. "Absence of Being" features work by Susan Burnstine. An opening reception for both exhibits will be held Friday, March 14, 6:30-9:30 p.m. While you’re there, check out the Center’s new permanent Vivian Maier Gallery, also opening March 14. Details at

Book discussion group in Heights

Columbia Heights Public Library, 820 40th Ave. NE, hosts a monthly book discussion group on the last Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m. Upcoming books and discussion dates: March 26: The Tale of Halcyon Crane by Wendy Webb; April 30: One Summer: America 1927 by Bill Bryson; May 28: Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline; June 25: Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell; and July 30: The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce.

Saturday: Opening reception for Art(ists) On the Verge

Northern presents the fifth edition of Art(ists) On the Verge at The Soap Factory, 514, 2nd St SE, from March 8-April 20. Opening reception: Saturday, March 8, 7-11 p.m.; Artist talks: Saturdays, April 12 and April 19, 12 p.m. Art(ists) On the Verge is an intensive, year-long, mentor-based fellowship program co-directed by Steve Dietz and Piotr Szyhalski with mentors Ta-Coumba Aiken, Christine Baeumler, Chris Larson, Abinadi Meza, Sarah Peters, and Diane Willow. Art(ists) On the Verge is a partnership with The Soap Factory. A publication of the exhibition with an essay by Susannah Schoweiler will accompany the exhibition. Always free gallery admission
