Topics related to creating more community resilience and sustainability are presented and discussed. This includes promoting a wholesome, sustainable living environment; good health and healthcare services; a strong local economy; adequate, affordable modes of transportation; and neighborly communication and support. Explore the latest in healthy yard care practices, including proper use of fertilizers, disposal and reuse of yard waste, keeping sidewalks ice free and managing runoff onsite. The workshop is designed to move participants quickly from an overview of healthy yard care practices to a completed raingarden design for their property with one on one assistance from Metro Blooms landscape designers and Hennepin County Master Gardeners. The American Craft Council, 1224 Marshall St. NE, continues its spring lecture series Thursday, May 9, 7-9:30 p.m., with "The Craft of Sign Painting," a look at the endurance of hand-painted signs in America. Faythe Levine and Sam Macon, directors and authors of the recently released documentary and book, "Sign Painters," will discuss their project, highlight contemporary practitioners of sign painting, and cite examples of quality, hand-painted signs right here in the Twin Cities. Forrest Wozniak and Phil Vandervarrt, two Minneapolis-based artists featured in "Sign Painters," will also be present to illustrate the time-honored methods of their craft. Run for the Boom! Participate in the Hot Dam 5K Fun Run on Wednesday, July 3 and support the Minneapolis Firework fund. Race day check in starts at 5:30 p.m. at Father Hennepin Bluffs Park. Take in views of the Minneapolis skyline as you enjoy a comfortable walk or run on this scenic Minneapolis course, which includes historic Main Street and the Stone Arch Bridge. Funds raised will benefit future Red, White and Boom 4th of July Celebrations in Minneapolis. An after party will include a free outdoor concert by Rogue Valley, plus the movie, "Top Gun." All participants 21 and older will receive a free beer from Harriet Brewing. Pre-registration fees: Adult $30 (includes T-shirt and one beer); Youth $10 (includes T-shirt).
